Ceramic vs. Porcelain Tiles

Tile installations have regained their popularity in recent years, and more private and commercial buildings are opting for this option when seeking remodeling solutions. Two popular options in this category when it comes to materials are ceramic and porcelain.

Some of the differences and similarities between ceramic and porcelain tiles include:

Makeup Composition

Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are made from clay, although ceramic features different alternatives including red, white, and brown. Porcelain is primarily made with white clay, as well as feldspar and sand. Porcelain is also created at higher temperatures, making them denser and more brittle than its ceramic counterpart.

Durability

Because of its makeup, porcelain represents a more durable material as compared to ceramic. Porcelain is also harder than ceramic tiles, making them more suitable for heavy-duty use. The higher density levels found in porcelain also mean that it’s less porous than ceramic, making it more water-resistant.

Cost

Because of its higher durability levels, porcelain is a bit more expensive than ceramic tiles. However, the difference in pricing isn’t very significant, especially when compared to other alternatives in the market.
